STAND BY YER BEDS!
Memories of National Service in the Royal Air Force 1947 to 1952

Stand By yer Beds Stand by yer beds!, compiled by a former National Serviceman, is an attempt to record the service lives of young men who were conscripted into the Royal Air Force, usually against their will - their thoughts and feelings when they began their basic training, how they survived the initial period, their technical training and life on their permanent Stations. Many letters received from such men are reproduced, some almost word-for-word and others edited, to illustrate their temporary careers.

Anyone who served in such circumstances will understand and will recall the sheer power held by the drill NCOs, the often tedious training courses, and the very different atmosphere on the active Stations. Throughout the anecdotes provided by the participants, the feeling one receives is that "I didn't like it much at the time but I wouldn't have missed it - it did me a lot of good".

In addition, a significant amount of factual information on the subject of the Schools of Recruit Training, the Acts of Parliament which controlled conscription, service numbers etc., is included, and an Appendix reproduces a few ditties which may bring back memories!
