- THE STORY OF 30 SQUADRON ROYAL AIR FORCE
From its formation in Egypt in 1915 to its present role as part of the Lyneham Transport Wing, 30 Squadron has always justified its motto - Ventre a Terre - translated as 'Flat Out'. The squadron pioneered the dropping of supplies to beleaguered troops in Mesopotamia in the First World War and was instrumental in devising an aerial policing policy during the inter-war period. In Greece, during the Second World War, 30 Squadron's Blenheims took part in many raids on the advancing enemy before being forced to retreat. After re-grouping, the squadron served in Ceylon and India and, during the latter stages of the war, in a fighter-bomber role in Burma, In the late 1940s the squadron took on its present transport role, participating in the Berlin Airlift and progressing from Dakotas through Valettas and Beverleys to its present aircraft, the Hercules. These the crews have flown virtually everywhere in the world and, in the course of their tasks, have operated in the Falklands, Belize and the troubled areas of the Balkans and the Gulf.
